Critical Phenomena, Strings, and Interfaces

چکیده
Traditionally, the participants of the “Ahrenshoop International Symposium on the Theory of Elementary Particles” form two nearly disjoint subsets, consisting of string theorists and lattice gauge theorists. So, for a plenary speaker the question arises: is it possible to give a talk which addresses both of these species? I don’t have an answer, but this contribution is meant as an attempt. Considering the basic theoretical objects which are being studied, there is no apparent relation. The geometrical objects of string theory are world-sheets of open or closed strings. We shall not speak about the additional internal degrees of freedom here. A parameterized world-sheet is described by functions x(σ, τ). In lattice gauge theory, on the other hand, the basic objects are group valued variables U(x, μ) associated with the links (x, μ) of a space-time lattice. That looks very different.

The Analytic Technique and Experimental Research Methods of Post-buckling about Slender Rod Strings in Wellbore
The buckling behavior of rod strings in wellbore is one of the key issues in petroleum engineering. The slender rod strings in vertical wellbore were selected as research objects. Based on the energy method, the critical load formulas of sinusoidal and helical buckling were derived for the string with the bottom of the wellbore pressure. According to the sinusoidal and helical buckling’s geomet...
متن کاملNonlinear vibration analysis of axially moving strings in thermal environment
In this study, nonlinear vibration of axially moving strings in thermal environment is investigated. The vibration haracteristics of the system such as natural frequencies, time domain response and stability states are studied at different temperatures. The velocity of the axial movement is assumed to be constant with minor harmonic variations. It is presumed that the system and the environment...
متن کاملBPS States of Exceptional Non-Critical Strings
We study the BPS states of non-critical strings which arise for zero size instantons of exceptional groups. This is accomplished by using F-theory and M-theory duals and by employing mirror symmetry to compute the degeneracy of membranes wrapped around 2-cycles of the Calabi–Yau threefold. We find evidence for a number of novel physical phenomena, including having infinitely many light states w...
متن کاملCritical Behavior of Interfaces: Roughening and Wetting Phenomena
The critical behavior of interfaces is discussed from a theoretical point of view. Two classes of critical phenomena will be considered: (i) Roughening phenomena related to changes in the interfacial morphology; and (ii) Wetting phenomena related to changes in the interfacial structure. In two dimensions, the critical behavior can be determined exactly for a variety of models. As a result, one ...
متن کاملIntroduction to Schramm-Loewner evolution and its application to critical systems
In this short review we look at recent advances in Schramm-Loewner Evolution (SLE) theory and its application to critical phenomena. The application of SLE goes beyond critical systems to other time dependent, scale invariant phenomena such as turbulence, sand-piles and watersheds. Through the use of SLE, the evolution of conformally invariant paths on the complex plane can be followed; hence a...
